TOOLS
NEEDED:
Following
are the minimum recommended tools that may be required to install the
rear spacer shims.
- Car jack (and
jack stands)
- Lug nut wrench
- Small, flathead
screwdriver
- Ratchet with
socket sizes: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm
INSTALLATION:
Read
through the following instructions thoroughly at least once before starting.
Estimated time for completion of installation: approximately 50 minutes.
Step 1: Removal of
rear wheel
Activate
the emergency/parking brake, and jack up the rear end of the vehicle.
Secure the vehicle on jack stands before proceeding. Loosen the lug
nuts and remove the rear wheel. Look behind the rear hub assembly (Figure
1).

Figure 1: All of the work will be performed behind
the rear hub assembly, the side indicated by the arrow
Step
2: Removal of rear hub assembly
Stick
a small, flathead screwdriver into the ABS plug and use it to push down
on the tab as you pull the end of the plug to remove it (Figure
2). Then remove the 10mm nut affixing the parking brake cable bracket
(Figure 3, A), and the 14mm bolt for the brake hard line (Figure
3, B). Now you are ready to unbolt and remove the four 12mm bolts
that attach the rear hub assembly to the suspension arm (Figure
4). Once all four bolts are removed, slowly pull the hub assembly
away from the suspension arm, making sure not to kink or bend the brake
line. The hub assembly will only need to be pulled a few inches from
the suspension arm to install the spacer shim.

Figure 2: Insert a flathead screwdriver into the
top end of the sensor plug and push down to lift the plug’s latch.

and Arrow B to the 14mm brake line bracket bolt.

Figure 4: These are the four 12mm bolts affixing the
rear hub assembly.
Step 3: Installation
of spacer shim
Place
a spacer shim over the back side of the hub assembly (Figure 5),
and then place the hub assembly with shim installed back on the suspension
arm bracket. Run the 17mm bolts provided in the kit, with split lock
washers installed, through the suspension arm mounting bracket, and
thread them into the hub assembly. (If the bolts do not go in easily,
the hub assembly might have shifted slightly during removal. To realign
the mounting holes, simply release the parking brake, grab and rotate
the assembly by the drum brake, and reapply the parking brake when the
holes are aligned.) Tighten the four mounting bolts in a cross pattern
in two steps, first hand tight, and then to a final torque of 46 ft-lb.

Figure
5: Here the aluminum spacer shim is shown installed on the
hub assembly ready to be reassembled.
Step 4: Reinstallation
of components
With
the rear hub assembly reinstalled with the spacer shim, it is time to
reinstall the other fasteners that were previously removed. Maneuver
the brake line into its bracket and tighten its mounting bolt. Then
attach the parking brake bracket nut and torque to 48 in-lb. Finally,
plug the ABS sensor cable back into its plug. Mount the wheel, lower
the car, and torque the wheel lug nuts to specification. Installation
on the other side is exactly the same.
